Catholic Synod on the Family may Lead to Changes for Catholic Divorce
Monday marked the first day of the Catholic Church’s Extraordinary Synod on the Family, in which Pope Francis and two hundred sixty-two bishops gather to discuss many potential changes within the Catholic church. Among the many topics up for discussion are the church’s stances on Catholic divorce and same sex unions.
Currently, the church does not allow divorced Catholics to remarry unless they obtain an ‘official annulment,’ an exhaustive process by a church tribunal aim to prove the marriage was never valid in the first place. Divorced individuals who remarry without obtaining an ‘official annulment’ are no longer able to receive communion, and considered sinful and adulterous.
It is unlikely that the church will radically change their view on hot-button topics like abortion or same sex marriage. However, it is entirely possible that the church will change it’s stance on divorced Catholics right to remarry.
