On January 1, 2009, new Massachusetts Child Support Guidelines replaced the older version, which had been in effect since 1987. This new formula and approach is considered a major shift from the past calculation and includes a formula that addresses both parents' income. One of the most important changes advises judges when they can deviate from the guidelines, which otherwise are presumptively used. College education expenses generally are dealt with separately, but in addition to, child support. An analysis of all support paid, including college costs, must be completed before an agreement is reached or a court order obtained.
